Humans tend to take sides very quickly. When you take a side, you take the perspective of it. You can observe the distressing aspects of that perspective and relate to the later emotionally. Empathy can be used as social weapon and also it can be compassion and emotional understanding and growth. This duality makes it a tool with two cutting edges. It is often used to propagate a certain viewpoint on a specific issue, encouraging seeing the other side as negative and dubious. It is hard to criticize the reasoning of it, because it uses strong emotions. Empathy is a conscious choice. It depends on what we choose to focus and how we apply our empathetic understanding.
